And we're off!

We left Durban at 5am and hit the road early. We got a brilliant sunrise on the way, and stopped for a coffee at Port Edward.

After that we were officially on holiday and in the Wild Coast. And wild it is! I loved every second of the drive, kids walking to school along the road and little towns we passed through.

The kids walk so far to get to school and I thought back to my primary school days in rural Wardville when we used to catch the bus. I can't imagine having to walk the whole way but these kids walk at least that far if not further. There are no parents or guardians with them either and we saw a group of 4-5 kids walking together who looked no more than 4 or 5 years old walking along a busy highway.

The landscape is very similar to New Zealand. Green, rolling hills - but no cows or sheep on them. It was slow driving on single lane roads, we got stuck behind plenty of trucks and taxis who pull out in front of cars all the time. There were signs saying "Potholes next 10km". every 10km there was another sign - it's easier to put up a sign than to fix the potholes.

We did 250km before 8am!
