Fairview Vineyard

Today we wanted an easy day without too much physical activity after yesterday, so we decided to go and eat cheese and drink wine. Mark's cousin Lauren recommended us to go to Fairview which is in Paarl, just out of Cape Town.

We got up early and went to the beach for an hour or so before heading to the vineyard.

Cape Town's water is freezing cold, even worse than NZ!

The is a ship than ran aground about 5 years ago and they are busy blowing it up so they can break it up to take it away. It was quite interesting to watch, the first blast caught us by surprise!

With the wine barrels
These oak barrels are imported from USA, France and Hungary. Each country gives the wine a different flavour. USA gives it more vanilla or cinnamon; France is more smokey, tobacco flavour and Hungary is Coffee and Cocoa.

We went to Fairview Vineyard and decided to go the full tasting. We got 8 different wines to taste - 3 white, 5 red and a matching cheese. Each one had it's own story and we got the whole history of the vineyard as well as a lot of information about different grapes and climates they prefer etc. It was very interesting and well worth the visit.

Biltong Tasting
We did have 6 to try but I had eaten 3 before the photo was taken. We had Smoked Kudu, Springbok, Droƫwors and beef biltong. They were all delicious!

The second vineyard we went to was Spice Route, which is owned by the same guy that owns Fairview. They have many different things here. You can do beer, biltong and chocolate tasting. We did the biltong tasting, then had a tapas and pizza lunch, then did the dark chocolate tasting. All of it was very good. I highly recommend anyone to go to this farm.

We had such a wonderful day today. The weather was perfect and the food and wine was incredible! Tomorrow we are off to Paternoster for a night!
