Cango Caves

We are staying just 7 km from the Cango Caves so we took our time in the morning and even slept in a bit. It gets so cold during the night that I wake up and cannot get back to sleep for ages so then I end up sleeping late in the morning.

We got to the caves for their 10.30am tour. We did the adventure tour which takes 90 mins but I think we were in there for almost 2 hours.

These caves are absolutely magnificent. I haven’t been to Waitomo Caves for years so I can’t really comment or compare, but they are pretty big. You walk through the entrance, which was found by accident in the 1700s when a shepherd followed his sheep in. There are different chambers and each chamber is more difficult to go through. It is narrow, slippery, there are stairs to climb, tunnels to crawl through. It is not for the faint hearted! We went 1.2 km inside the mountain and it still carries on for another 5km, which is not open to public yet.

There is one spot that is called the devils chimney, in which you have to maneuver yourself up this narrow vertical chimney. It is hard to get your grip as the sides are slippery and wet and somehow you haul yourself up because other people are waiting behind you! This is the part that is 1.2 km inside the mountain so it is dark (although they did have a few lights on). It was such an amazing experience!

We stopped at Wilgewandel Holiday Farm for lunch and I had another ostrich burger. Ostrich meat is very healthy and has very little fat in it. It is very tasty. The Wilgewandel Holiday Farm is a neat place to bring kids. They have lots of animals: Ostrich, Pig, Rabbits, Goat, Sheep and Peacocks. You can do a flying fox, go out on a pond in a pedal boat and they have pedal cars too.

Yesterday when we arrived it was 32 degrees and dry, so today it dropped to 18 degrees and started raining. Rain follows me everywhere, even the desert where it rarely rains; it rains while I am there!

Luckily it stopped so we could light the fire and cooked sausages for our pasta! I’m not looking forward to having to braai on coals again as we have been so spoilt with our wood braais - fantastic smoky wood flavours. I think I will send mark out to get wood when we get back to Durban as coal just isn’t the same. And don’t even mention a gas braai as that is just terrible!

Latest stray animal we adopted!

We finally remembered to get some Marshmallows at the shop today so had a great time toasting them on the fire. We can’t wait to have kids and do all these things with them ☺
