Port St John's

Last night we invited our campsite buddies over for a braai. They were a bit late getting back from their walk so we only put the meat on at 7.30pm by which time the weather had set in. Thunder, lightning and heavy rain and it didn't stop till morning. Why does it always rain when you are trying to pack a tent up! Still, we eventually got sorted and hit the road.

It's amazing how many people 50 million is compared to 4 million. Even in the rural areas there are still a lot of houses and Rondavals on every hill where in NZthere wouldn't be any.

The people work hard in the countryside. Everything is done by hand, there are no electric tools or machines to use. Even the babies are tied on their mummy's back with a sarong - no prams or strollers. Even if they did have those things they would never use them as the terrain is too difficult to push a pram!

We got to Port St. John's pretty quick then looked for a place to stay. We went to 3 places before eventually finding one we liked. Most were pretty run down. Our view is of a beautiful cliff. We always try to stay by the sea but this time we are by the river which makes a nice change. Our campsite is immaculate with perfectly mowed lawns and stunning chalets. We are enjoying it very much and I'm glad we decided to stay here and not one of the other places.

The river is brown due to so much rain over the past 5 or 6 months. Apparently the fishing has been crap too but we will try our luck tomorrow!

After we sorted out our tent we relaxed in the shade on our picnic blanket. I was dozing, enjoying the peacefulness when marks shouts and jumps up. When mark jumps, i jump faster! A huge green snake ran over mark and as he jumped up he pushed it away with his hand. I had never moved so fast in my life but I didn't get a glimpse of it. Mark said it was probably a bush snakes and not poisonous but you can never be too sure. I still have not seen a live snake here, only dead ones. While I'm not to keen to make friends with snakes I am excited to see a mole. I see mole hills everywhere but never see the mole. Hopefully this trip ill get to see one.

We have been lucky enough to make a wood fire every night so far. Bush TV is the best!

Braai with a view!
